Frustrating Evening at Goodwood, Beautiful morning at Whitsbury

June 9, 2012

Having walked the course with our jockey and come up with a plan to try and get Cobbs Quay into the winners enclosure on a windswept evening it was a sense of frustation that accompanied our viewing of the 6.20 at Goodwood. With a plan of being handy and as close to the rail as possible it was one of those races where nothing seemed to go right and the plan went out the window early on. The draw didn’t help but sitting at the back of the field posted wide and then coming even wider around the final bend certainly finished off any chance of winning in what was a steadily run affair where it paid to be near the front with eventual winner making much of the running. These things happen but its frustrating as we didn’t learn a great deal about the horse or what the next move ought to be with him.

Racing is about looking forward though and the sun was out this morning and it was great to get some workers out on the grass. Great Charm showed plenty of zest in a nice solo spin following his promising third on Monday. He clearly enjoyed the juice in the ground and clocking a good time, the final half in 47 seconds. Following him up was Whitechapel, with an eye shield on for the first time in an effort to get him to settle better than he has done in the past – it seemed to do the job and he also finished up in 47 seconds for the final half. Fireback had a light breeze stretching his legs out over three furlongs.
