Round up of the weekJanuary 17, 2016
A steady week at home but the first runners for the year out on the track. Karnage was the first on Wednesday at Kempton, once again looking like the winner with a furlong left to run, only to get mugged late on the piece to finish second. Making it three placed efforts in a row. His turn certainly can’t be far away. Ideally he probably wants a more strongly run race but it seems that more and more races on the all weather over a bit of a trip are becoming crawl and sprint affairs, it seems difficult for horses to make the running and win. Getting the fractions right is a real art and there seem to be very few jockeys who can at the moment. It was great to catch up with Clive and Trish Wilson who are looking forward to Who’sthedaddy running next week.
Bailiwick returned after a slightly longer absence than ideal after a couple of minor ailments and found himself in a race that was strong for the grade, again at Kempton. The winner Jammy Guest was formerly pretty smart and looks to be back on track for a return to a higher rating so it wasn’t the best opportunity for Bailiwick as there were a couple of other last time out winners in the race too. However, Bailiwick is quite a laid back character and takes a fair amount of graft to keep fit so we felt it was imperative to get a run into him. He wasn’t disgraced in fourth place and confirmed that he is going to have to run over slightly further to be seen at his best.
