Winner – Av A Word
Av A Word notched his second career victory at Brighton this afternoon (Tuesday, June 27th). He is developing into a consistent chap despite having his quirks and is a credit to the hardiness of the horses bred at Sanfield Stud by Peter Onslow and his fiancée Ann Harrison. Peter races the three year old gelding with Kevin Nash. He has now picked up a cheque on five of his last seven starts to take his overall career record to 13 runs 2 wins 2 seconds and 1 third.
He is improving physically and strengthening up all the time and looks best suited by strongly run races. This makes today’s effort noteworthy as there wasn’t much pace and Luke Morris gave him an excellent ride as he is a horse that travels much better with a lead so it took some nerve to hold onto him just behind the leader before a late challenge. Mentally he is becoming more confident around other horses, a feature of his earlier career was that he panicked in amongst horses and wasn’t seen to best effect as a result. Going forward he has already proven he can compete at a slightly higher level and a small rise in the weights as a result of today’s win shouldn’t mean a halt to his consistent run of form. He should also prove effective over a bit further which gives plenty of options for more fun. Interestingly the best horses bred on the same cross (Aussie Rules onto a Mark of Esteem mare) have proved effective over further, even at nearly two miles in one case.
As ever thanks to the team for all their hard work at home getting Av A Word ready for his races.
