Sherman McCoy at Lingfield tomorrow and thoughts on today’s runner
Sherman McCoy runs in the 1.00 at Lingfield tomorrow (Wednesday 19th December). Willie Twiston-Davies will once again be riding him in this 2 mile handicap. Sherman McCoy ran a solid race on his first start for us over a mile and half last week, making the running before being out kicked in the closing stages but he was staying on nicely at the end. The bulk of his best form is over a mile and three quarters so this wasn’t surprising. This is a very slightly lower grade race and the sharp nature of the track should mean that he is able to stay the two miles. As there isn’t a suitable mile and three quarter race in the near future it looks worth having a go at this race as the horse seems to have recovered well from his recent run and it looks winnable.
The race looks an open affair with no obvious form standout, many of the runners having a mix of jumps and flat form. Squad is as good a starting point as any having run well in similar races recently without quite finding the winning post. Ginger Fizz who won a bumper makes his flat handicap debut and should be suited by the step up to two miles. Za’Lan is interesting returning back to the flat for a new trainer after failing to take to jumping and won a maiden on the all weather, the trip is a test for him.
Mont Signal was disappointing at Lingfield today, he missed the break and could never get into the race which was quite slowly run in. The sharp six at Lingfield probably didn’t play to his strengths and we’ll consider stepping him up in trip for his next start, there is however a race over six at Wolverhampton that may suit on the 28th of December.
