Thoughts on Crucible at Southwell today
Crucible runs in the 5.05 at Southwell today (Tuesday March 31st). Tom Queally takes the ride on the big geldings handicap debut. Crucible progressed at a modest level in each of his three starts in maiden company. Its always tough for these older horses stepping into handicap company for the first time against battle hardened foes, who mightn’t always have a huge amount of ability but certainly know how to race. This represents a step up in trip for Crucible which should suit as he will be able to travel more within himself over this trip rather than being rushed off his feet over sprint trips. His pedigree gives out mixed signals as to how far he should stay but certainly his physique suggests this longer trip ought to suit.
The race features plenty of Southwell specialists, With Hindsight won nicely last time over seen at the track over this distance and this race is no tougher than the one he took that day and with leading all weather rider Luke Morris booked has to be taken very seriously.
