Thoughts on Today’s Runners
A day for some of the two year old fillies, we have two runners this afternoon. First up is Lil Guff in the 3.10 at Newbury. Paul Hanagan is in the irons for the seven furlong Listed Radley Stakes. They are drawn in stall 1. Lil Guff steps up in distance and in class as she takes a shot at black type. She has been tough and consistent throughout the season and whilst she possibly lacks the class of some of her rivals, she has plenty of experience, guts and should not mind what is looking likely to be fairly unpleasant ground.
Many of today’s runners are not proven on the softer going, which could make for an interesting race. Miss Carol Ann won a hot maiden on debut comfortably over seven furlongs. Jumbly sets the standard though winning her first two starts and finishing fourth in Group 2 company.
Lil Guff is by Twilight Son, out of the Holy Roman Emperor mare, Lady McGuffy. She is owned by Wayne & Sarah Clifford, who also bred the filly at their Byerley Stud. Lil Guff will be led up by Epona Miller, who cares for and rides the filly at home.
Our second runner of the day is Spoonful Of Sugar in the 5.30 at Chelmsford. Jack Mitchell is on board for the six furlong nursery handicap and the pair are drawn in stall 11. Spoonful Of Sugar steps up in distance today as she makes her nursery handicap debut. She has been disappointing to date and needs to show more. The draw has not been kind.
Jusumi wears a hood again and steps up in distance today, which should bring about improvement. Berry Quick wears blinkers today for the first time after running on well in her last start over course and distance, a run which probably sets the standard here in terms of form. Beyond that one is probably looking for a lightly raced type to step up, Jungle Run has taken little steps forward with each start and may find this sharper six furlongs suits.
Spoonful of Sugar is by Exceed and Excel, out of the Henrythenavigator mare, Sagres. She is owned by Simon Hope and Stephen Barrow and as bred at Aston Mullins Stud. She will be led up today by Charlotte Wright, who looks after the filly at home.
