Winner – Al Rufaa

On Friday night (November 17th) Al Rufaa joined the growing list of horses that have been rejuvenated by the switch to Sarsen Farm. On just his second start for the yard he was settled off the pace over a mile at Wolverhampton by Dylan Hogan. He benefitted from the strong pace set by the leaders. Al Rufaa was fully in command as he came through rivals to win going away in the home straight.

Al Rufaa races in the colours of Norman Carter. Howard Lofthouse also has a share in the gelding along with members of the Capture the Moment. Congratulations to all members of the partnership which is run in house. The gelding, like yard star Astro King, is by Kingman. Whilst, he has some way to match his stablemate’s exploits this was a step in the right direction. He was rated 105 at his peak so despite a 7lb raise for his win, he still has room for further improvement off 89.

Rejuvenation Process

Al Rufaa was purchased by Daniel & Claire at the Tattersalls Summer horses in training sale. He cost 24,000 Guineas at the end of July. The six year old was initially given time to freshen up here at Sarsen Farm in our turn out paddocks. The gelding was then built back up with a program of lunging and Pessoa work to increase muscle strength across his back, before returning to ridden exercise. Our analytics lead us to believe that this is a horse who can thrive over slightly longer trips than he has raced over. He has often raced very freely so we focussed on finding a training routine that kept him relaxed and settled. It’s always a team effort with every horse here at Sarsen Farm. However, Shaun Johnson has done an excellent job riding him out most days a deserves a mention. Thanks to the entire team.
