Winner – Southwold
Southwold took his career record to two wins from three starts under a good ride from Richard Kingscote at Southwell. The gelding still showed plenty of signs of his inexperience against a field seasoned handicappers, winning with his ears pricked. His performance suggests that there ought to be further improvement to come. He collected a very decent prize for the grade. It’s great to see that progress is being made on prize money. Full credit to Southwell and ARC for putting on £13,600 for the race. Hopefully the full field of 14 runners shows that prize money is the best way to improve field sizes.
The gelding was bought back in for just 5,000 Guineas as a yearling. The decision to race him by breeders Gary & Lesley Middlebrook is paying off. He is the second foal out Intrigue who won for us and is proving a useful broodmare as her first foal Belletti is also a multiple winner. She has an Expert Eye yearlings and a Footstepsinthesand two year old colt.
Big thanks to the team for their hard work with Southwold. Particularly, Mark Lawson who rides him most days at home and Epona Miller who cares for him and led him up yesterday.
